Captain William Sturgis

The namesake of the Captain William Sturgis meeting room at Fairmont Battery Wharf was a hero for having fought off Chinese pirates from seizing his ship, "The Atahualpa" in 1801. Boston was a target for pirates roving the seas. As late as June 9th 1835, five Spanish pirates were hanged at the Leverrett Street Jail and on September 12, 1835, the last pirate was hanged in Boston.
